Mora, Sanchez Both Win Pac-10 Titles; Team Is 8th Feb. 28, 2005-- San Luis Obispo,CA
No. 1-seeded Juan Mora at 141 pounds and No. 2-seeded Leonel Sanchez at
174 Monday night captured Pac-10 Wrestling Championships for Cal State
Fullerton. It's the first time the Titans have had multiple champions
since the 1978 season in the Pacific Coast Athletic Association, but the
Titans had to settle for eighth place in the team standings after a record-setting
dual meet season that saw them go 14-4-1 overall and 5-2-1 in Pac-10 duals.
Mora scored a 6-1 decision over Steve Esparza of host Cal Poly SLO in
the finals. Four bouts later, Sanchez beat Jeremy Larson of Oregon State,
4-2. Both wrestlers earned berths in the NCAA Championships beginning
March 17 in St. Louis, Mora for the third time and Sanchez for a second
trip.
Landon Seefeldt, who earlier in the day placed fourth at 197 pounds, received
one of 10 wild-card berths into the NCAA Championships, where he will
be making his third consecutive appearance. Morgan Atkinson, the Titans'
157-pounder, lost a consolaton bout earlier in the day and ended up defaulting
in the fifth-place bout.
Arizona State won the team championship with a score of 106 points. Boise
State was second with 93 points followed by Oregon (88), UC Davis (82),
Cal Poly (81), Oregon State (74), Cal State Bakersfield (67), Fullerton
(52.5), Stanford (48.5) and Portland State (26).
