Streak Halted as UCSB Downs Titans, 67-48
Jan. 31, 2004 – Fullerton, Calif.

Box Score

UC Santa Barbara's Kristen Mann poured in 15 points and Lindsay Taylor added 14 points to help lead the Gauchos to a, 67-48, victory over host Cal State Fullerton on Saturday night in a Big West Conference women's basketball match-up at Titan Gym.

The loss put an end to the Titans' three-game winning streak and leaves them at 5-13, 5-4 in the Big West at the midway point of league play. First-place UCSB improved to 14-5, 8-1 in conference action, winning its fifth consecutive game.

Fullerton freshman Charlee Underwood came off the bench to lead the Titan offense, tying her career high with 15 points, grabbing five rebounds and making four steals on the night. Senior Tamara Quinn scored 12 points and moved past Joey Ray for 13th on the school's all-time scoring list with 1,014 points.

The Titans were held scoreless for the first 6:29 of the game until senior Rochelle Ortega hit a pair of free throws to make it 10-2. Fullerton, which shot 32 percent from the field for the game -- 28.6 percent in the first half -- was held without a field goal until back-to-back lay-ups off a pair of steals by Quinn with 13:14 to go in the period.

UCSB led by as many as 20 points on three occassions in the opening half, despite shooting just 37 percent from the field. The Gauchos took a 36-18 lead into the lockerroom at the break.

Cal State Fullerton stormed back to open the second half, holding the Gauchos to only a three-pointer by Mann in the first 7:25 of the period, using a 14-3 run to close to within seven points at 39-32 with 13:27 left in the game.

That would be as close as the Titans would get, however, as UCSB exploded for a 23-3 run over the next eight minutes, building a 27-point advantage to seal the win. Fullerton closed out the game with an 12-3 run of its own over the final 5:04 for the final score.

Every player who entered the game scored at least a point for the Gauchos, who had five players other than the scoring leaders contribute six or more points in the win. UCSB held a 42-30 advantage on the boards and shot better than 64 percent (9-for-14) from three-point range.

Cal State Fullerton returns to action on Saturday (Feb. 7) with a road game at UC Riverside to kick off the second half of Big West Conference play. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:10 p.m. at the Student Recreation Center on the campus of UCR.
