Pruitt, Ortega Notch Double-Doubles in Loss
Dec. 9, 2003 – Fullerton, Calif.

Box Score

Cal State Fullerton senior Rochelle Ortega and sophomore Amber Pruitt each tallied double-doubles on the night, but it wasn't enough to overcome a balanced scoring attack from visiting Brigham Young as the Cougars defeated the Titans, 72-51, on Tuesday night in a non-conference contest at Titan Gym.

Fullerton fell to 0-6 overall on the season and 0-3 against Mountain West Conference opponents this year. BYU improved to 5-2 overall.

For Ortega it was her second double-double in as many games, posting season high's with 14 points and 12 rebounds. Pruitt also notched her second double-double of the year with 15 points and 11 boards, tying her career high in rebounds in the process.

However, that was all the scoring the Titans got as three players combined for just 22 points, led by freshman Charlee Underwood's nine points.

BYU was led by Julie Sullivan, who tallied 14 points and five assists on the night. Nancy Seljaas and Kristen Kozlowski each poured in 11 points for the Cougars.

Cal State Fullerton led by two points on two occassions in the first four minutes, but a three-pointer by Kali Taylor with 15:24 remaining gave the Cougars a one-point lead they would never relinquish. A 10-0 run over the next two minutes by BYU extended its lead to eight points, but the Titans would not quit, drawing to within three points on a pair of free throws by Pruitt and a three-pointer by Underwood to make it 14-11 with 12:44 left.

However BYU would outscore the Titans 26-12 the rest of the way, leading by as many as 17 points en route to a 40-23 halftime lead.

Fullerton scored five of the first seven points of the second half, but could not make a dent in the BYU lead as the Cougars erupted for an 11-2 lead over a three-minute span early in the period to ice the game. Brigham Young led by as many as 24 points in the period at 58-34 with 11:51 remaining.

The Cougars shot just .391 from the floor for the game, but more than made up for it on the boards, outrebounding the Titans 48-36 for the game. Cal State Fullerton shot just .327 from the field for the game.

Cal State Fullerton returns to action on Saturday evening (Dec. 13) as the Titans host former Big West Conference rival UNLV at Titan Gym. Tip-off is scheduled for 5 p.m., and is the first game of a doubleheader with the Cal State Fullerton men's team, which will take on Eastern Washington at approximately 7:05 p.m.
