Long Beach State women's basketball (10-12, 6-7 Big
West) held Cal State Fullerton (6-15, 6-6 Big West) to just 12 first-half
points and cruised to a 74-43 victory on Saturday evening.
The win snapped a two-game slide by The Beach.
With a new starting five, including a three-guard backcourt of Christina
Mack, Crystal McCutcheon and Candice Wilson, LBSU jumped out to a 12-2
start and 37-12 halftime lead. CSF was held without a basket for seven
minutes in the first half.
"We decided to put forth our best defensive unit in the starting
lineup," said a relieved Head Coach Mary Hegarty. "I was pleased
with the start we had and we were able to take good shots on the other
end."
Jayme Connors led the 49ers with 14 points and eight rebounds, while Candice
Wilson added 12 points. Connors went 7-of-9 from the field. Lauren Bull
added 11 points. LBSU shot 49% from the field. The Beach outrebounded
the Titans 44 to 30
Charlee Underwood led the Titans with 13 points as CSF shot 31% from the
field.
Long Beach State led 37-12 at the half, shooting 42%, outrebounding the
Titans 30 to 19 and committing just six turnovers. The Titans missed 10
their first 11 shots and shot just 18% for the half. Tessa Moon's jumper
at 3:35 broke a string of seven minutes without a point for the Titans.
Fullerton is home next week, hosting Idaho on Thursday night and Utah
State on Saturday night.
