Gauchos Put Clamps on Titans' Offense

UC Santa Barbara held Cal State Fullerton to 22 percent shooting from the floor and rolled to a 75-38 Big West Conference victory Monday night in Santa Barbara.

The Titans fell to 7-18 overall, 7-9 in the Big West Conference. The Gauchos improved to 21-6, 15-1 in league play.

The first-place Gauchos got 17 points and 11 rebounds from Kristen Mann, who led two other players in double figures. Senior guard April McDivitt added 15 points, six rebounds and six assists, while Lisa Willet had 12 points and five boards.

Amber Pruitt was the only Titan in double figures with 11 points, hitting 7 of 9 free throws, and grabbing seven rebounds. Meghann Keathley was the only Titan with as many as 3 field goals.

UCSB shot .527 from the field and outrebounded Fullerton, 51-30.

The Titans stayed withith six points of the Gauchos for most of the first half, even closing to within three points at 15-12 with 8:26 remaining. However, a 15-0 run over the next four minutes extended UCSB's lead to 18 points and the Gauchos never looked back en route to a 33-16 halftime lead.

UC Santa Barbara led by as many as 34 points midway through the second half as the Titans hit only one field goal in the first 6:30 after the break.

Cal State Fullerton closes out the 2003-04 regular season this weekend with a pair of games against Pacific on Thursday (March 4) and Cal State Northridge on Saturday (March 6). Both are scheduled to tip off at 7 p.m.
