UC Santa Barbara junior Lindsay Taylor scored a game-high 25 points and
led four other Gauchos in double figures as No. 19 UCSB defeated visiting
Cal State Fullerton, 94-52, on Thursday night in a Big West Conference
women's basketball match-up at The Thunderdome in Santa Barbara, Calif.
The Titans fell to 7-19 overall, 5-10 in the Big West Conference. The
Gauchos improved to 22-4 overall, 14-1 in league play.
Titan freshman Amber Pruitt finished with a career-high 13 points on the
night on 5-of-9 shooting from the floor. No other Titan finished in double
figures as Andrea Adams had nine and Tamara Quinn added eight.
Taylor hit on 9-of-14 from the floor and also finished with six rebonds
and five blocked shots. Kristen Mann (21 points, 10 rebounds) and Brandy
Richardson (10 points, 13 rebounds) each notched double-doubles on the
night and were joined in double figures by Mia Fisher (10 points).
UC Santa Barbara came out firing in the first half, scoring the first
12 points of the contest and holding Cal State Fullerton scoreless for
the first 3:38 of the game. The Titans snapped the streak on a jumper
from the left baseline by Tamara Quinn to get Fullerton on the board.
The Gauchos lead by as many as 20 in the opening period on two different
occassions. The Titans closed to within 13 points at 33-20 thanks to an
8-2 run capped off by a three-point play from Pruitt.
UCSB shot over 60 percent from the floor in the opening period, forcing
11 Fullerton turnovers. The Titans hit on just under 44 percent of their
shots in the first half, but went to the line just once compared to 12
times for the Gauchos.
The second half was more of the same from the Gauchos, who outscored the
Titans 43-20 in the period, including holding the Fullerton offense scoreless
for a stretch of 3:51 midway through the second half.
UCSB shot .581 from the floor for the game to the Titans' .338. The Gauchos
also went to the line 22 times to Fullerton's three.
Cal State Fullerton returns to action on Saturday night (March 8), closing
out the 2002-03 regular season against Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo at
7 p.m.
