Cal State Fullerton Falls to UMKC, 65-53

Trailing by five at the break, UMKC guard Katie Houlehan scored 21 of her game-high 22 points in the second half, including hitting 5-of-7 from beyond the arc to lead the visiting Kangaroos to a, 65-53, come-from-behind victory over Cal State Fullerton in a non-conference women’s basketball contest on Monday afternoon at Titan Gym.

Cal State Fullerton fell to 2-9 overall and has lost its last four consecutive games heading into Big West Conference play which begins this weekend. UMKC improved to 4-9 overall on the season.

The Titans, who led 28-23 at the break, shot poorly in the second half, hitting on only 9-of-21 from the floor (.310) after shooting just under 45 percent from the field in the first half. In contrast, the Kangaroos shot .452 from the field after the break (14-of-31) and .714 from three-point range – all of those by Houlehan.

Fullerton wasted junior forward Heather Hansen’s fourth double-double of the year in the loss, as Hansen went for 14 points and set a new career-high with 17 rebounds. Sophomore guard Tamara Quinn scored a season-high 15 points to go with five rebounds, three assists and a team-best three steals. Senior guard Chante Gifford was also in double figures, chipping in 12 points on 5-of-11 shooting.

UMKC was led by Houlehan, who scored 22 points and had four rebounds on the day, and center Kim Hansen, who scored 14 points and grabbed a team-high nine rebounds for the Kangaroos.

After trading baskets for the opening moments of the second half, UMKC put together an 8-1 run to tie the game at 33-33 after a technical foul was called on Fullerton’s Heather Hansen during a ball that was tied up under the basket. Houlehan’s first three pointer of the day seconds later gave UMKC the three-point lead, but the advantage did not last long.

Back-to-back baskets by Jennielee Greslie and Quinn gave the Titans the lead once again, and a pair of free throws seconds later by Quinn gave Fullerton a 39-36 lead with 12:14 remaining in the period.

Out of a media timeout, Houlehan hit a three-pointer on the far sideline with just two seconds remaining on the shot clock to tie the game once again at 39-39 with 11:42 remaining. The Titans came back to take the lead once again on a basket by Rochelle Ortega, but that would be the last time the Titans would lead.

A 10-1 run by the Kangaroos – highlighted by two Houlehan three-pointers – pushed the UMKC lead to eight points at 52-44 with 6:39 remaining and they never looked back. Gifford later hit a three-pointer with 1:28 remaining to bring the Titans to within seven, but Fullerton could not get any closer.

The Titans return to action on Thursday (Jan. 3) at they open Big West play against UC Irvine at 7 p.m. at Titan Gym. Fullerton will then take on Long Beach State on Saturday (Jan. 5) at 7 p.m. to close out the homestand.
