Off Pesky Titans, 73-62 Mar. 6, 2002 – Anaheim, Calif. Box Score Top-seeded UC Santa Barbara was hounded and challenged all night long by a tough-minded Cal State Fullerton team, escaping with a 73-62 victory in the quarterfinals of the Big West Women's Basketball Tournament on Wednesday evening at the Anaheim Convention Center. Cal State Fullerton finished its 2001-02 season with a 4-24 overall record and a 2-13 mark in the Big West Conference. The four victories were the most for a Titan squad since the 1998-99 season when Cal State Fullerton went 4-22 under Denise Curry. The Titans, who lost their two previous meetings to the Gauchos by a combined total of 77 points this season, trailed by a mere six points, 54-48, with 7:18 remaining in the game. UCSB embarked on a 10-2 run to increase its advantage to 14 points at 64-50, but CSF responded with a 7-2 run of its own to close within nine points at 66-57. UCSB increased its winning streak to 19 games and have won 16 straight Big West Tournament contests. Sophomore center Lindsay Taylor led all scorers with 21 points on 8-for-11 shooting. She also had four blocked shots and seven rebounds in only 22 minutes of action. Junior guard Jess Hansen tallied 15 points, hitting four three-pointers. Cal State Fullerton received a solid performance from senior guard Lindsay Sotero, who knocked down six three-pointers and finished with a career-high 18 points in her final game as a Titan. Junior Heather Hansen finished with 10 points. UC Santa Barbara faces either Long Beach State or Cal Poly in a semifinal matchup on Friday. ####
