Jan. 15, 2002 – Fullerton, Calif.

Box Score

UC Riverside posted five players in double figures and held off host Cal State Fullerton, pulling away late en route to an 81-67 victory over the Titans in a Big West women’s basketball contest on Tuesday night in front of 315 fans at Titan Gym.

Cal State Fullerton fell to 2-13 overall and 0-4 in the Big West Conference. The Titans have now lost eight consecutive games and have started 0-4 in conference play for the fifth time in the last seven seasons. UC Riverside improved to 7-7 overall and 4-0 in league action to remain atop the Big West standings.

Fullerton was led by senior forward Tricia Lamb, who scored a Cal State Fullerton career-high with 27 points – including 6-of-12 from the three-point line – in 32 minutes of play. Junior Heather Hansen notched her sixth double-double of the season with 11 points and 11 rebounds, but that was all the offense the Titans could muster.

UC Riverside was led forward Crystal Harris, who had a team-high 16 points to go with eight rebounds and three assists. She led a balanced attack that featured a pair of 14-point efforts by Stephanie Hughes and Amy Houchens, a 12-point night for Starr Knight off the bench and an 11-point performance by Julie Shaw.

The Highlanders were helped by tremendous ball control, committing just five turnovers on the night – the lowest number of turnovers by a Cal State Fullerton opponent this season, eclipsing the previous low of 12 set by Cal Poly on Jan. 8. The Titans took care of the ball as well, committing a season-low 13 turnovers.

Both teams shot well for the game with UC Riverside hitting on 49 percent of its shots for the game, including 12-for-24 (.500) in the second half. Cal State Fullerton shot 41 percent for the game, and just under 42 percent from the three-point line, but could not keep pace with the Highlanders.

Fullerton led by four points in the first three minutes, but that lead was quickly whittled down as the Highlanders took a three point lead thanks to a 7-0 run with 14:20 remaining. With the Titans trailing by just one point, UC Riverside went on a 13-4 run over the next 3:37 to build a 10 point advantage and the Highlanders never looked back, taking a 43-35 lead into the lockerroom at the half.

The Highlanders opened the second half with a 12-4 run and it was all downhill from there. Cal State Fullerton never got closer than 10 points midway through the period as UC Riverside outscored the Titans, 38-32, in the second half.

Cal State Fullerton returns to action on Saturday (Jan. 19) as the Titans travel to Moscow, ID to take on the Idaho Vandals at 7 p.m.
