UC Irvine Holds Off Cal State Fullerton, 73-61
Jan. 3, 2002– Fullerton, Calif.

Box Score

Cal State Fullerton sophomore guard Tamara Quinn scored a game-high 21 points and led two other Titans in double-figures, but it wasn’t enough to overcome a nine-point halftime deficit as UC Irvine held off host Fullerton, 73-61, in the Big West Conference opener for both teams on Thursday night at Titan Gym.

The Titans fell to 2-10 overall and 0-1 in league action while the Anteaters improved to 4-8, 1-0.

Cal State Fullerton was powered by Quinn’s season-high 21 points – 18 of those coming in the first half – before leaving with just over four minutes remaining in the second half due to injury. She also added six rebounds (four on the offensive boards) and two steals. Sophomore center Rochelle Ortega posted her sixth double-digit scoring performance of the season with 10 points while grabbing eight rebounds and blocking two shots. Senior Chante Gifford had 10 points on the night.

UCI was led off the bench by Brandy Hudson, who notched a double-double on the night with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Guard Lisa Woznick added a season-high 15 points while Cindy Oparah had 14 points and eight rebounds.

In perhaps the most complete game played by Cal State Fullerton all season, the Titans took the lead early on a steal and lay-up by Gifford seconds into the game then, after trailing by as many as seven points, used a 9-0 lead to take a 13-11 lead with 13:23 remaining in the first half. The two teams traded baskets before a short jumper by UCI’s Kristin Green put the Anteaters up for good.

The Titans got back to within one point on three different occassions in the opening period, but a 12-4 run to close out the half by UC Irvine gave the Anteaters a 35-26 halftime advantage heading into the lockerroom.

In the second half, Cal State Fullerton did not back down, staying close the entire way, eventually whittling the lead to seven points with 2:36 remaining in the game on a layup by Gifford. However the Titans were stopped by hitting on only 4-of-9 from the free throw line for the half while UCI went 7-for-10 from the line in the final two minutes.

Fullerton went to the charity stripe only 10 times in the entire game – nine of those coming in the second half – and hit on only five of them. In contrast, the Anteaters were 21-for-32 at the line for the game. The Titans shot well, making 26-of-62 (.419) from the floor, including 14-of-29 (.483) in the second half while UCI shot .446 for the contest. Fullerton held a 40-38 advantage in rebounding, but committed 28 turnovers for the game.

The Titans close out their four-game homestand on Saturday (Jan. 5) as they take on Long Beach State at Titan Gym. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
