Titans Fall to Spartans, 66-54, in Home Opener
NOV. 20, 2001 – Fullerton, CA

San Jose State opened the second half with a 14-0 run and held host Cal State Fullerton scoreless for a stretch of 8:26 as the Spartans overcame a five-point halftime deficit to defeat the Titans, 66-54, in a non-conference women’s basketball game on Tuesday night in front of 156 fans at Titan Gym.

Cal State Fullerton falls to 0-2 overall on the season and has lost its last 10 consecutive contests dating back to the 2000-01 season. San Jose State improved to 1-0 overall in winning its season opener.

Titan forward Tricia Lamb led the team with 17 points and three assists while senior guard Chante Gifford had 12 points on 5-of-16 shooting. Junior center Heather Hansen grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds to go with six points, four assists, and two blocked shots.

San Jose State guard Cricket Williams came off the bench to score a game-high 19 points, including 9-for-10 from the free throw line in the second half. Atari Parker was also in double figures, netting 10 points and grabbing seven boards on the night.

The Titans shot well in the first half, hitting on 15-of-30 from the floor, and led by as many as eight points with 3:48 remaining in the first period. San Jose State also shot well in the first half, making 14-of-34 (.412) from the floor, but the story was three-point shooting as the Titans hit on 3-of-12 from long range en route to a, 37-32, halftime advantage.

In the second half, however, the Titans’ shooting hands went cold, hitting only six free throws in the first 12:11 of the period before sophomore Rochelle Ortega made Fullerton’s first field goal on a nifty pass from Hansen at the 7:30 mark to make the score, 54-45. The Titans got warmer after a Jessica Kellogg basket put SJSU up, 56-45, as Lamb hit a three-pointer and two free throws to pull Cal State Fullerton to within six points at, 56-50, with just over six minutes remaining.

However, a 9-4 run by the Spartans, six of those points coming via the free throw line, closed out any hopes of a Titan comeback as San Jose State posted the victory.

After trailing, 23-16, on the boards in the first half, the Titans stepped things up in the second half, out rebounding the Spartans, 23-17. Fullerton’s undoing came on the offensive end, making just 3-of-19 (.158) from the floor compared to San Jose State’s 9-of-20 (.360). The Titans also committed 24 turnovers in the game compared to the Spartans’ 15.

Cal State Fullerton returns to action on Friday (Nov. 23) at 7:00 p.m. as they take on Morgan State at the Titan Gym.
