49ers Roll to a 90-61 Victory Over Titans

Long Beach State’s Crystal Givens scored a game-high 19 points and led five other 49ers in double figures as they cruised to a, 90-61, Big West Conference victory over host Cal State Fullerton on Saturday night in front of 225 fans at Titan Gym.

The Titans fell to 2-11 overall and 0-2 in the Big West Conference. Cal State Fullerton has dropped its last six consecutive contests. Long Beach State improved to 5-7 overall and 1-1 in league play.

Fullerton was led by junior forward Heather Hansen, who notched her fourth double-double of the season with 12 points and 11 rebounds. She also had a block and two steals on the night. Sophomore guard Tamara Quinn added 11 points and four rebounds wo go along with two assists. It is only the second time this season that she has been held to without a steal.

Long Beach State had all five starters and six players overall notch 10-or-more points on the night, paced by Givens’ 19 points and five rebounds. Forward Ekuah Ramsey added 17 points, seven rebounds and two steals while Jayme Connors, Candice Wilson and Lauren Bull each had 12 points on the night. Tamara Inoue added 11 points and six assists on the night.

The 49ers capitalized on 32 Titan turnovers, which tied a season-high for Cal State Fullerton set back on Dec. 21, 2001 against Air Force in Colorado Springs, Colo. Long Beach State outrebounded Cal State Fullerton, 41-39, and shot .529 from the floor compared to the Titans’ .414.

Cal State Fullerton trailed by as many as seven points in the opening six minutes and did not hit a field goal until the 14:40 mark of the first half. The Titans stormed back, however, using a 9-2 run to pull even with 10:28 remaining and even take the lead on the next possession on a jumper by Hansen.

However, a 10-0 run by the 49ers upped the lead back to eight points at 22-14 with 7:10 remaining and they never looked back. Long Beach State led by as many as 18 points in the closing seconds of the first half and by as many as 30 points with 4:23 remaining in the contest.

The Titans return to action on Tuesday (Jan. 8) as they hit the road to take on Cal Poly at 7 p.m. at Mott Gym in San Luis Obispo, Calif.
