Cal State Fullerton held visiting San Diego State to an .043 hitting percentage
and tallied 14 blocks on the night as the host Titans defeated the Aztecs
for only the second time ever by the score of 3-0 (30-27, 30-23, 30-15)
on Tuesday night at Titan Gym.
Fullerton improved to 8-5 overall, snapping a six-match losing streak
to SDSU which dated back to the 1989 season when both were members of
the Big West Conference. The Titans improved to 2-28 all-time against
the Aztecs (since 1980), who fell to 0-13.
The eight victories for Cal State Fullerton match the season total from
all of last season.
The balanced Fullerton offense was led by seniors Tiffany Dolven and Lauren
Goins along with teammate Alyssa Opeka, who all had only eight kills apiece.
Freshman libero Vanessa Vella amassed a match-high 17 digs on the night
and junior middle blocker Amy Dixon had 10 blocks.
San Diego State was led by senior Kara Moriarty, who had 16 kills, but
hit just .098 for the match.
The Titans capitalized on 32 attack errors by the Aztecs' offense, nine
serving errors, and 12 receiving errors. No other player had more than
five kills for SDSU.
The Titans return to Big West Conference play on Friday night (Oct. 1)
as they hit the road to take on UC Riverside at the Student Recreation
Center at 7 p.m.
