Titans Claim First Big West Win Over Cal Poly
Sept. 24, 2004 – Fullerton, Calif.

Behind 18 kills from senior Lauren Goins, the Cal State Fullerton women's volleyball team snapped a 10-match Big West Conference losing streak dating back to last season, sweeping visiting Cal Poly in three games (30-21, 30-28, 30-18) on Friday night at Titan Gym.

Fullerton improved to 7-4 overall, 1-2 in the Big West. The Titans notched their first Big West win over a league opponent other than UC Riverside since a five-game win over UC Irvine in 2001.

Cal Poly, which had won 34 of the previous 36 meetings with Fullerton, saw its 13-match winning streak against the Titans snapped in falling to 2-9 overall, 0-2 in conference play.

Goins, who hit .400 for the match, was joined in double figure kills by teammates Alyssa Opeka and Sarah Morrison, who each tallied 11 kills, respectively. Freshman setter Julie Geissert, making just the second start of her career, had 39 assists, six kills, and nine digs.

Cal Poly was led offensively by Emily Doris and Kayla Mulder, who each notched 12 kills on the night. Libero Kristin Jackson had a match-high 21 kills for the Mustangs.

The Titans hit .336 for the match, including a .472 clip in the deciding game three. Cal Poly, which hit .241 as a team, outblocked the Titans, 7-6.

Fullerton returns to action on Saturday night (Sept. 25) at 7 p.m. as the Titans play host to nationally-ranked UC Santa Barbara at Titan Gym. Cal State Fullerton has never defeated the Gauchos in the previous 47 meetings dating back to 1982.
