Five Titans had double digits in kills as Cal State Fullerton continued
their winning ways at home by upsetting UC Irvine 3-2 in a Big West Conference
women’s volleyball match Thursday night at Titan Gym.
Fullerton improves to 14-13 overall and 6-11 in the conference tying the
school record with the 1996 squad for most conference wins in a season.
Fullerton also extends their school record for home which now stands at
13-2.
UC Irvine falls to 17-9, 10-7, and snaps a 5 game winning streak against
the Titans.
Fullerton came out swinging, hitting a season-high .344 on the night led
by senior Lauren Goins who picked up her 18th double-double of the year
by racking up 20 kills and 10 digs while Sarah Morrison also contributed
offensively by putting away 18 kills. Carley Dial had 17 kills and hit
.438, committing only three errors on the night. Tiffany Dolven had 12
kills and Alyssa Opeka added 11 more along with her 4 service aces to
put away the Anteaters.
Kelly Wing was the standout offensively for the Anteaters, slamming home
28 kills and adding 11 digs and serving three aces. Sami Cash hit a monstoerous
.516 picking up 18 kills with only two errors in the loss.
After hitting over .400 in both games one and two, Fullerton staggered
and hit just .189 in game three as Irvine continued to hit well at a .486
clip to pull ahead 2-1. Fullerton found their way back and took game four
hitting .316 to UCI’s .243 led by Morrison’s seven kills and
then went on to take the deciding game holding the Anteaters to only .160
average.
Errors were seemed to be the deciding factor in the match. Irvine committed
25 hitting errors while Fullerton committed just 16 miscues on the night.
Both teams commited 9 service errors.
Fullerton wraps up their 2004 season tomorrow night versus Long Beach
State in another Big West Conference match. Game time is at 7:00 pm and
will include a ceremony celebrating four departing seniors.
