Goins Gets 1,000th in Titans' Loss Oct. 22, 2004 – Santa Barbara, Calif.
Senior outside hitter Lauren Goins slammed home her 1000th
career kill in
Cal State Fullerton’s Friday night 3-0 loss (30-17, 30-26, 30-20)
to UC Santa Barbara in a Big West Conference meeting at The Thunderdome.
With the victory the 20th-ranked Gauchos pick up their ninth sweep of
the
season to improve to 13-3 overall and 8-2 in the Big West to stay atop
in the conference standings, while the Titans fall to 10-9, 3-7.
By registering her 1000th kill, Goins becomes only the fourth Titan to
ever accomplish that feat and the first player since 2000 when Megan Sabo
notched her 1000th slam.
Goins (12) and junior Sarah Morrison (11) were the only Titans with double-digits
in kills.
Game two proved to be the closest game of the night as the Titans built
up
an early lead of 13-8 before the Gauchos went on a 5-0 run to tie the
game.
The Titans regained the lead at 19-18 after a hitting error by UCSB only
to have the home team respond with four unanswered points to pull ahead
for good.
Vanessa Vella had 14 digs and Jaclyn Owens added 11 more but Fullerton
couldn’t stop the Gaucho offense. Gaucho Janine Sandall led all
players with
17 spikes as UCSB out-hit CSF .318 to .225.
Fullerton will travel to take on last-place Cal Poly in another Big West
game Saturday night at Mott Gym. The match is set to begin at 7 p.m.
