Four Cal State Fullerton Titans tallied double-digits in kills, but the
Cal Poly Mustangs prevailed by a score of 3-2 (30-21, 28-30, 24-30, 30-28,
15-11) to pick up their first Big West Conference victory of the year,
and snap an 11-match winless streak Saturday night at Mott Gym.
Fullerton falls to 10-10 overall and 3-8 in conference while Cal Poly
improves to 3-17, 1-10 on the season.
The Titans struggled offensively hitting only .175 on the night and were
out-blocked by the Mustangs 25-11. Despite the low hitting average four
Titans slammed ten or more kills. Lauren Goins had 19 to lead the team,
Sarah Morrison had 17, Carley Dial had 15 and Alyssa Opeka added 13 of
her own. Jaclyn Owen led all players with 5 service aces in the loss.
In game one the Titans struggled defensively hitting only .064 to the
Mustangs .263 as Cal Poly stifled the Titan offense with 7 blocks.
Alyssa Opeka and Sarah Morrison each killed four as the Titans took game
two despite hitting only .064 as a team.
The Titans had their best game of the night in game three as Morrison
and Goins spiked seven kills each and the team hit a combined .359. CSF
also recorded 17 digs in the third game.
Game four was decided at the net as Cal Poly out-blocked Fullerton 8-3
led by Margaret Donoghue who assisted in 5 of them en route to her game
leading 17.
Cal Poly held a 8-6 advantage at the change-over and never relinquished
their lead in the fifth and decisive game to bring their losing streak
to an end.
The Titans will now come home for a four-game home stand where they have
been very comfortable going 9-2 at Titan Gym this season. Fullerton will
play host to UC Riverside (10/28), UC Davis (10/29), Cal State Northridge
(11/5) and University of Pacific (11/6). All games will begin at 7 p.m.
