Near-Record Night Lifts Matadors to 3-0

The Cal State Northridge offense enjoyed a near-record night as the Matadors
hit .435 on their way to a 30-13, 30-18, 30-16 victory over visiting Cal
State Fullerton in a Big West Conference match Saturday night at Wells
Fargo Court in The Matadome.
With the win, the Matadors improve to 10-5 overall and 6-2 in the Big
West, while the Titans drop to 9-7 overall and 2-5 in conference.
For Northridge, senior Jen Ryan led the way with a match-high 20 kills
while hitting .552 (20-4-29). Fellow senior Theresa Lischer added 10 kills
hitting .474 (10-1-19) and Heather Fobian and Becky each chipped in eight
kills. The
Matadors were hitting .514 (39-3-70) after game two, but dipped to an
overall .435 after hitting .311 in game three. The Northridge school-record
hitting percentage in a match is .493 set in 1996. Libero Jessika Hammerich
recorded a match-high 14 digs and Ryan added 10 digs of her own for her
eighth double-double of the season.
For the Titans, Lauren Goins posted a team-high 10 kills to go with 10
digs, while Sarah Morrison added five kills and Carly Dial chipped in
four. Julie Geissert came off the bench to lead the Titans with 11 assists.
Fullerton hit .103 (24-15-87) as a team on the night.
CSUN took control of the match in game one as the Matadors jumped out
to an 8-2 lead and never looked back on their way to the 30-13 game one
win. Game two was tied 9-9 after a Kelly Zabielski kill and CSUN then
won 12 of the next 14 points to go on top 21-11, eventually settling on
a 30-18 final. Game three was similar to game two as the teams were knotted
at 6-6 before Hammerich served the next seven points to put CSUN up 13-6.
The Matadors then won 17 of the next 27 points to claim the three-game
sweep.
Northridge wound up with 10 aces to to three for Fullerton and out-blocked
the
Titans 6.0 to 4.0. The Matadors also had 45 team digs to 34 for the Titans.
