No. 22 LMU Hands Titans Three-Game Loss Sept. 7, 2004 – Los Angeles, Calif.
Box Score
Cal State Fullerton senior outside hitter Lauren Goins had 12 kills on
the night, but it wasn't enough to lift the Titans as No. 22 Loyola Marymount
downed visiting Fullerton, 3-0 (30-18, 31-29, 33-31), on Tuesday night
at Gersten Pavilion.
The Titans fell to 3-1 overall with the loss while the Lions improved
to 3-1.
LMU was led by juniors Krista Houseman and Dina DeBernardi, who tallied
12 and 11 kills on the night, respectively. Houseman's kill total tied
a career-high.
The Lions hit .244 for the match, including a .324 clip in game one. The
Titans, who had four players hitting in negative numbers for the match,
hit .153 collectively.
LMU held Cal State Fullerton to a team hitting percentage of .029 in the
first game and out-blocked the Titans 5.0 to 2.0. DeBernardi had five
kills, as the Lions took game one 30-18.
In a game that was tied as late as 29-29, Houseman and Hughes secured
back-to-back points to get the Lions the 31-29 second game win. Houseman
launched her eighth kill of the night to earn game point for the Lions,
while Michelle Hughes' service ace sealed the game win.
The Lions' Jody Carlson came up big late in the third game, breaking a
24-24 tie with a kill to give the Lions the one point advantage. She then
ended a 3-0 Fullerton run with her seventh kill of the night to keep the
Lions within one at 26-27. On the next play, she got under a hard hit
ball, sending it over and out of the reach of the Titans to tie the game
again at 27 and cause a Fullerton timeout.
The Titans came out of the timeout and won the next two points, but LMU
fought off back-to-back Fullerton game points on kills by Michelle Look
and Hughes. DeBernardi halted the Titan's third opportunity to win game
three with a kill that tied the game at 30. LMU took over from there and
won game three 33-31 on a Houseman kill and a service ace by Hughes
