Titans Fall to No. 15 UC Santa Barbara
in Three Sept.
27, 2003 Santa Barbara,
Calif.
Francina Edmonds and Megan Blackshire each had 16 kills to lead 15th-ranked
UC Santa Barbara to a 30-17, 30-25, 30-16 sweep of Cal State Fullerton
in a Big West Conference match in Santa Barbara Saturday night.
The Gauchos improved to 7-4 overall and 3-0 in Big West Conference play,
while Fullerton dropped to 6-9 overall and 0-4 in conference action.
After Santa Barbara hit at a.529 clip to claim game one, Fullerton regrouped
for the second frame. The Titans built an early 10-6 lead following
a Lauren Goins kill and a Gaucho hitting error. However a run of
four straight points by UCSB - ignited by Erica Menzel's put-away - evened
the score at 10-10, and a later 5-0 spurt gave the Gauchos a 15-12 lead.
The Gauchos' only game three deficit came at 4-3, after which they went
on a 6-0 run that included a pair of Blackshire kills. Santa Barbara doubled
up on the Titans at 22-11 following an ace by Edmonds, and cruised the
rest of the way.
Lauren Goins led Fullerton with 14 kills and hit a respectable .333.
She was the only player in double-digits for the Titans, who out-blocked
Santa Barbara seven to two.
Fullerton hosts UC Riverside next Saturday at 7 p.m.
