Titans Swept by San Diego State

San Diego State got a season-high 17 kills from Zlatina Anguelovato defeat Cal State Fullerton, 3-0 (30-25, 30-28, 30-23), in a nonconference match Tuesday evening in Peterson Gym.

The Aztecs improvedto 10-8 on the season while the Titans fell to 7-10.

As a team, the Aztecs hit .309 and had a season-high 12 service aces. They also tied their 2003 best with 60 assists, led by setter Sara Engstrom, who recorded her top figure of 2003 with 56 assists.

The Titans were paced by the hitting of Elena Goldina and Lauren Goins, who finished the night with 13 and 11 kills respectively.

With SDSU leading 9-8 in game one, the home team outscored the visitors 6-1 to take a 15-9 lead, going on to the five-point victory. Moriarty paced the Aztecs with seven kills while Goldina kept Fullerton close with five.

Game two was a story of momentum shifts on both sides of the net. Trailing 6-4, the Aztecs went on a 12-2 run to take a 16-8 lead. However, Fullerton fought back to tie the game at 22-22 and went to take the lead at 25-23. It was then SDSUs turn, getting a pair of kills from Anguelova, one each from McPartland and Schauermann, and an ace from Engstrom on the way to the two-point victory.

In game three, a one-point Aztec lead at 18-17 turned to a seven-point advantage at 27-20 behind the play of Anguelova and Moriarty down the stretch. Goldina (6 kills) and Goins (5 kills) led the Titans, but it wasnt enough to prevent SDSU from claiming the win.

The Titans host Pacific and Cal State Northridge this weekend.
