2002 Volleyball
Merrilee Conway joins the Titans after serving as the women’s volleyball manager at Fresno State last year. The Bulldogs went 14-10 in 2001 and finished fourth in the Western Division of the Western Athletic Conference with a 7-6 record. “We are excited to have Merrilee on board in time for the upcoming season,” Head Coach Carolyn Zimmerman said. “She will bring new energy and enthusiasm to this program in her new role as the second assistant coach. Merrilee brings with her a wealth of experience as both a player and as a coach at the high school and club levels.” Prior to her postition at Fresno State, Conway was a successful high school coach at both the varsity and junior varsity levels, most recently serving as the varsity girl’s volleyball head coach at Hanford West High School in central California for the past two seasons. She has also served as the head track coach at Hanford West, an assistant volleyball coach at Bullard High School in Fresno, Calif. –where she led the Knights to a Central Valley Championship in 1999 –and a junior varsity head coach at three different high schools, leading all three to league championships. As a player, Conway played one season at Big West Conference rival Long Beach State before transferring to Fresno State in 1990. In her only season with the Bulldogs as an outside hitter, she helped Fresno State post a 21-13 overall record and a berth in the NCAA tournament for only the second time in school history. She finished fourth on the team in digs (207) and fifth in kills (156) while chipping in 47 assists, 27 blocks and 12 aces. Conway, a native of Madera, Calif., is a 1994 graduate of Fresno State with a bachelor’s degree in Liberal Studies and is currently in the process of earning her master’s degree in Kinesiology with a specialization in Sport Psychology.
