UCSB Celebrates
Big West Title at Titans' Expense Nov. 16 , 2002 – Santa Barbara, Calif. The seventh-ranked UC Santa Barbara womenˆs volleyball team clinched its first-ever outright Big West Conference championship Saturday night by sweeping Cal State Fullerton 30-20, 30-26, 30-23 in the Thunderdome. The Gauchos, who improved to 26-1 overall and a perfect 16-0 in Big West play, previously shared top league honors with Long Beach State in 1993. Meanwhile the Titans fell to 4-26 and 0-17 against conference opponents, but played much better than their record would indicate. Danielle Bauer led UCSB in kills for the 18th time this season with a match-best 19, and also notched her 13th double-double of the season (44th career) thanks to a 14-dig effort. Goins paced all Fullerton attackers with 13 kills, while the Titans received a pair of 13-dig performances from Bebernes and Renee Vignery. CSF was out-scooped by the home team 68 to 60 despite coming up with some spectacular saves.
