Highlanders Sweep by Titans in Big West Opener

Freshman Jamie DeKiewiet had a career-high 18 kills on .394 hitting and 12 digs to lead the UC Riverside Highlanders past the Cal State Fullerton Titans 30-24, 30-24, 30-23 in their Big West opener on Saturday night at the Student Recreation Center.

The Titans (4-9, 0-1) were all business jumping out to a quick 4-0 lead in game one, but the Highlanders answered back with five straight points. The teams remained close through the middle of the game until Riverside reeled off seven straight points, including two kills and two block assists by DeKiewiet, taking a 19-14 lead to gain control and eventually take the game, 30-24.

In game two, UCR (5-5, 1-0) scored three straight points to extend their lead to 20-15 but CSF answered right back to close the lead to 20-17. However, Riverside took six of the next seven points, as senior Pam Hartman and freshman Valerie Bueno each had two kills, extending their lead to 26-18. The teams traded points until the Highlanders prevailed 30-24.

Fullerton again jumped out to a quick 5-1 lead but Riverside mounted a comeback, evening the score at 8-all. Once again, UCR took control scoring four straight points to take a 29-22 lead and eventually the match on a kill by DeKiewiet for the 30-23 win.

Hartman had a double-double with 13 kills and 11 digs while junior Rosanna Parizek added nine kills on .529 hitting. Sophomore Tiffany Brooks had 42 assists and 10 digs while Bueno recorded seven kills and a career-high 11 digs.

Sophomore Lauren Goins led the Titans with 15 kills and 12 digs. Senior Krista Bebernes had seven kills and 10 digs while senior Kim Levey added 31 assists and five digs.
