Titans Toppled by Tennessee in Season Opener

Janelle Hester had a match-high 23 kills and Julie Knytych had 45 assists without an error to lead Tennessee past Cal State Fullerton, 30-25, 30-23, 30-19, in the opener for both teams at the Rose Hill Classic in the Bronx, N.Y.

The loss spoiled the debut of Titan Coach Carolyn Zimmerman, in her first season at the helm after seven years as an assistant with the program.

Fullerton was paced by sophomore outside hitter Lauren Goins, who had 15 kills and 10 digs. Senior setter Kim Levey also turned in a double-double with 30 assists and 11 digs. Newcomer Carli Ross put down 11 kills for the Titans, who hit just .144 as a team.

Fullerton will continue play in the Rose Hill Classic on Saturday with matches against host Fordham (2 p.m. EDT) and Iona (4:30 p.m. EDT).
