Titans' Woes Continue with Loss at Northridge
Sept. 24, 2002 – Northridge, Calif.

Box Score

Cal State Northridge (6-5 overall, 1-2 Big West) snapped its three-match losing streak with a 3-0 (30-24, 30-28, 30-19) victory over Cal State Fullerton (4-10 overall, 0-2 Big West) in The Matadome on Tuesday night.

Both teams entered the match desperately needing a win as each team had lost nine consecutive games.  Fullerton has now lost 12 straight games and seven consecutive matches.

Former Northridge assistant coach Carolyn Zimmerman made her first return engagement to Northridge as the Titans' head coach.

Fullerton, which has never won in Northridge (0-8 all-time), hung tough in the opening set as the two teams were tied 13-13.  But Northridge engineered an 11-3 run to take a commanding 24-16 lead.  Northridge©ˆs Liz Naegle ended the scoring in game one with a kill in the middle to claim the first game 30-24 for the Matadors.

The second set saw Fullerton claim its first lead in the match.  The Titans led by as many as five (12-7) in the second set, but Northridge quickly tied the match at 14-14 on a kill by Erica Aere.  There would be eight more ties in the second game, the last coming at 23-all, before the Matadors would seize control of the second game with a 6-2 run to put Northridge ahead 29-25.  But three straight hitting errors by Northridge saw the Titans close the game to 29-28.  Heather Kirby fired a shot cross court to hand the Matadors game two, 30-28.

The third and final game was all Northridge, as the Matadors jumped out to a 7 2 lead.  Cal State Fullerton tried to rally on back-to-back service aces by Lauren Goins to make it 10-9 Northridge.  But the Matadors went on a 17-6 run to seize control of the match.  Kirby again had the game-winning shot in the third set to end the scoring at 30-19.

Goins had it going for Cal State Fullerton, but she was the only Titan to reach double figures in kills with 10.  She completed a double-double outing with a team-high 12 digs.  Titan setter Kim Levey also posted a double-double with 26 assists and 10 digs.

The Matadors were led by their senior outside hitters Jennifer McNees and Erica Aere.  Aere tallied a match-high 13 kills and added seven digs and two service aces.  McNees chipped in a solid all-around performance with 10 kills, eight digs, a career-best nine total blocks and three aces.

Northridge outhit Fullerton 46-34 in kills and .211 (46K, 22E, 114TA) to .026 (34K, 31E, 117TA) in hitting percentage.  The Matadors also recorded more digs (48-45), service aces (7-2) and total blocks (14.5-8.0) than Fullerton.

Northridge will host UC Riverside at 7 p.m. in the only Big West match of the day on Thursday, Sept. 26.  Fullerton travels to Pacific and will face the 24th-ranked Tigers on Sept. 27 at 7 p.m.
