2001 Volleyball
Coaches
Tenth-year Head Coach Mary Ellen Murchison was hired on June 25, 1992, to rebuild a Titan program which had suffered much controversy. And to her credit, Murchison has taken significant steps toward establishing the Titans as a contender in perhaps the best volleyball conference in the country. In 1995, in only her fourth season at the helm, the Titans finished 12-19 overall and, significantly, 5-13 in Big West play, then the best conference finish ever for a Cal State Fullerton squad. The following year the Titans posted a 16-13 record to claim the school's best season in terms of winning percentage. (Only one other season featured more wins as the Titans were 18-17 in 1981.) The 1996 squad's 6-10 Big West record now stands as the benchmark for record in conference play. Prior to her arrival at CSF, Murchison spent 11 seasons as the head coach at Santa Clara University, where she also served as assistant athletic director from 1979 to 1986. In 1991 she was an assistant at cross-county rival UC Irvine. Murchison, 52, compiled a record of 162-181 at Santa Clara. Her final season in 1988 was her most successful as her squad finished 20-12 overall and 12-2 in the WCC (2nd place). Actively involved at Santa Clara, she was Co-Director of the Girls Volleyball Camp (1984-89), WAIAW Tournament Director - Division I Volleyball Regionals, committee member for Volleyball Festival 84, a member of the NCAA regional committee and was West Coast Conference volleyball coaches representative from 1985 to 1988. Murchison has a 230-374 career match record for a .381 winning percentage. Her specialty, though, has been resurrecting programs and her work at Cal State Fullerton has confirmed that. She is only the fourth head coach to direct the Titans on the Division I level. She received her bachelors degree in English from Long Beach State in 1972 and obtained a masters degree in school administration from Santa Clara in 1984. She resides in San Clemente with her husband, Jerry Kiltz.
