Swept by Top-Ranked Long Beach State Oct. 9, 2001 Fullerton, Calif. Box Score No. 1-ranked Long Beach State kept its unbeaten streak alive to start the season, improving to 12-0 overall and 6-0 in the Big West Conference by sweeping visiting Cal State Fullerton 30-13, 30-16 and 30-14 before 1,636 fans at The Pyramid Tuesday night. It was the ninth sweep in 12 tries for the top-ranked 49ers. Fullerton fell to 7-7 and 3-4 in the Big West. Brittany Hochevars eight aces were the second most ever in an LBSU match. Hochevar leads the Big West Conference in aces with just under one ace per game. The junior from Fowler, CO had seven aces earlier this season against New Mexico. Hochevar added seven assists, four digs, three blocks and three kills to her night. Tayyiba Haneef led all players with 16 kills and a .481 percentage, while Cheryl Weaver added 13 kills, 10 digs and a .500 percentage. Elisha Thomas had 10 kills and a .444 percentage. Roxanne Barlow had seven kills for CS Fullerton. LBSU hit .398, Fullerton .105. Keri Nishimoto had 36 assists. LBSU jumped out to a 16-3 lead in game three on their way to a 30-14 sweep. The 49ers took game two 30-16, hitting .353. Fullerton hit 111. Using a 12-0 run, LBSU extended to a 24-9 lead, including five aces (in 12 serves) by Brittany Hochevar. The Beach took game one 30-13, ending the set on an 18-5 run. LBSU hit .417, CSF .056. The Titans closed to 12-8 before the 49ers went on a 12-3 run to go up 24-11. Long Beach State next host UC Irvine on Saturday at 7:30 p.m., while CS Fullerton travels to UC Santa Barbara on Friday at 7 p.m.
