Titans Lose to Northridge After Winning First Game

Cal State Northridge stopped its longest losing streak of the season at five matches with a 3-1 (27-30, 33-31, 30-18, 30-22) win over Cal State Fullerton on Thursday, Oct. 18, in The Matadome. With the win, Cal State Northridge improved to 10-9 overall and 4-6 in the Big West. Cal State Fullerton dropped to 7-10 overall and 3-7 in the Big West.

Northridge’s victory ensured a season sweep of the Titans, which lost a five-game match to the Matadors on Sept. 19, 2001, in Fullerton, Calif.

The Matadors found out earlier in the day that they would be without the services of their senior outside hitter Alexis Cormiér, who was not cleared to play due to an injury. Northridge inserted true freshman Jessika Hammerich into the starting lineup and she responded with nine kills, 16 digs, three service aces and three total blocks.

Senior opposite Laura Walter added 19 kills, nine total blocks (two solo) and seven digs against the Titans. Two Matadors recorded double-doubles on the night. Junior outside hitter Erica Aere had 17 kills and 18 digs while freshman setter Nadine Nickel had 32 assists and a team-high 19 digs. Another freshman, opposite Heather Kirby, made the most of her playing time with season-highs of nine kills while hitting a match-high .467 (9K, 2E, 15TA) and contributing a season-high four total blocks.

Cal State Fullerton was led by a quartet of players that each reached double figures in kills. Leading the Titans was Megan Sabo, who recorded a double-double with 19 kills and 19 digs. Jaclyn Owen also registered a double-double for the Titans with 12 kills and 11 digs, as did setter Kim Levey, who tallied 53 assists and 13 digs. Katie Crawford and Be Holcombe each contributed 10 kills for the Titans, which fell to 0-7 lifetime against the Matadors in Northridge, Calif.

Krista Bebernes added a match-high 20 digs for the Titans, but tallied just three kills while hitting .000 on the night (3K, 3E, 13TA).

Cal State Fullerton opened the match by claiming the first game 30-27. The Matadors held their biggest lead at 16-12, but the Titans reclaimed the lead with a 5-0 run at 17-16. The score was at 26 when Vanessa Kelterborn put the Titans in front 27-26 with a kill. Hammerich had three consecutive hitting errors as Fullerton closed out the first game 30-27.

The biggest lead of the second game for either team was just three points, which Northridge held six times, the last at 29-26. But the Titans fought back to tie the score at 29-29 on some strong serving by Sabo (one ace). With the score tied at 31-31, Northridge’s Aere recorded two-straight kills to tie the match at one game apiece with a 33-31 victory.

The Matadors took control of the third game midway through the set with strong defense leading to scoring opportunities. With Northridge leading 16-13, the Matadors earned five straight points with four kills by four different hitters to push the lead to 21-13. Northridge closed out the third game 30-18 by winning the last four points.

Northridge dictated the points in the fourth game, breaking a 6-6 tie with four straight points to take a 10-6 lead. The Matadors never looked back at that point and never trailed. After Fullerton closed the gap to three points at 12-9 on a kill by Sabo, Northridge responded with a 7-1 run to jump ahead 19-10 on three straight hitting errors by the Titans.

Fullerton, which has lost five straight matches, will visit Pacific on Saturday night.
