Titans Drop Third Straight with 4-3 Loss
to UCR Apr. 8, 2004 Riverside, Calif.
The Cal State Fullerton women's tennis lost it's third
straight match, falling in a nail-biter to conference rival UC Riverside,
4-3, at the Student Recreation Tennis Courts on Thursday.
The Titans fell to 11-9 overall, 1-5 in the Big West. Two of their last
three losses have been by a single point.
The match came down to No. 6 singles. Catrisha Cabanilla won the first
set, 6-4, and was leading in the second set when she was stung in the
middle of the back by a bee. After a brief timeout for the athletic trainer
to look at her, she came back to play and posted a 7-5 win over Caroline
Freeman to give the match to the Highlanders.
UCR won the doubles point, taking the No. 1 and No. 2 matches.
Casey Cross and Kim Tran posted an 8-4 win over Ruya Inalpulat and Ioana
Sisoe at No. 1 , and Michelle Beyronneau and Carolyn Mitchell took No.
2, 8-6. The Highlanders were edged in No. 3 doubles, 9-8, as Kelley Takeshita
and Cabanilla fell to Gina Le and Carolyn Freeman.
In singles play, Beyronneau dispatched Inapulat at No. 1, 6-2, 6-2, and
Cross defeated Le, 6-3, 6-2. For Cross, the win was her 10th straight
victory in singles dual matches. Fullerton won 3 and 4 with Ioana Sisoe
and Carla Rocha claiming victories, then took No. 5 as Mai-Ly Tran posted
a come-from-behind 2-6, 6-0, 6-2 win over Carolyn Mitchell, setting up
the final battle at No. 6 between Cabanilla and Freeman.
Fullerton closes out the 2004 regular season with a pair of matches next
week. The Titans face UC Irvine on April 14 at 2 p.m. and Hawaii on April
16 at 1:30 p.m. Both matches will be played at the Titan Tennis Courts.
