Sweeps Doubleheader at Riverside April 9, 2005 Riverside, Calif. Box Score - Game One | Box Score - Game Two The Cal State Fullerton softball team won its second Big West Conference series of the season, sweeping a series-opening doubleheader from host UC Riverside by the scores of 8-4 and 3-1 on Saturday afternoon in Riverside, Calif. Fullerton improved to 15-14 overall, 6-2 in the Big West Conference, while UC Riverside fell to 11-30 overall, 0-8 in league play. The two teams conclude their series on Sunday afternoon (April 10) at 12 p.m. GAME 1: Cal State Fullerton 8, UC Riverside 4 Titans freshman Crystal Vieyra went a career-best 3-for-3 while Katie Gollhardt and Candice Baker each slammed home runs on the afternoon as the Titans opened the series with an 8-4 victory over the host Highlanders. With Fullerton leading 3-1 after four innings, the Titans broke things wide open by plating five runs in the fifth. Freshman Amanda Kamekona had an RBI single to get things started after a fielder's choice and a single to start the inning. Gollhardt then reached on a fielder's choice to load the bases and bring up Baker, who smacked the first pitch from UCR starter Sara Radabaugh (5-17) over the centerfield fence for her first home run of the year and the first grand slam of her Titan career to make it 8-1. UC Riverside wouldn't go quietly, however, as a fielder's choice and a single put a pair on for Melissa Sanchez, who promptly smacked her third home run of the season to center to get the Highlanders back to within 8-4. Weekley (3-3) earned the win for the Titans, tossing six innings while allowing four runs on six hits, walking three and striking out six. Baker pitched the final inning in relief, allowing just one hit. The Titans staked Weekley to an early advantage, scoring twice in the second inning thanks to a one-out double by Ashley Van Boxmeer and back-to-back run-scoring doubles by Tiffany Hoff and Crystal Vieyra to get Fullerton out of the gate. UCR cut the deficit in half with a run of its own in the second without the benefit of a hit. Melissa Sanchez led off with a walk and moved to second on a missed sacrifice when the throw from the catcher went to first base. Mandy Salcido later sacrificed her over and Sanchez scored on Jennifer Thompson's sacrifice fly to make it 2-1. Freshman Katie Gollhardt got the run back for the Titans in the third, smacking her first career home run over the fence in left field to make it 3-1. Gollhardt and Van Boxmeer finished with two hits on the day while all but two of the Titans' starters had at least one hit. GAME 2: Cal State Fullerton 3, UC Riverside 1 Cal State Fullerton junior Marissa Marzan allowed just one run on five hits in a complete-game effort as the Titans swept the doubleheader with a 3-1 victory in the nightcap. Fullerton again jumped out to an early lead in the third inning, plating a pair of runs with some help from the UCR defense. Lindsey Bashor reached on a one-out single and moved to second, beating out a throw to second on Amanda Kamekona's fielder's choice. After a ground ball for the second out moved both runners into scoring position, Candice Baker's grounder in the hole at shortstop forced a quick throw that went wide at first, allowing both runs to cross for the 2-0 lead. The Titans made it 3-0 in the fifth on an RBI single to right field by Ashley Van Boxmeer, scoring Baker from second to extend the lead. UC Riverside finally got on the board with two outs in the sixth, putting a pair on via singles by April Murray and Jessica Black. Then, with two outs, Melissa Sanchez singled to center, driving home Murray with the Highlanders' only run. Marzan (6-5) struck out six while walking only two in the victory. Daniela Iolamo (2-1) suffered the loss for UC Riverside, allowing one earned run on six hits, walking one and striking out two. Van Boxmeer and Katie Gollhardt each added two hits to lead the Titans. ####
