Cal State Fullerton sophomore Ashley Van Boxmeer slammed two home runs
and sophomore Candice Baker tossed a complete-game four hitter to led
the Titans to a 5-1 victory over UNLV in the final game of the 2005 Palm
Springs Classic in Cathedral City, Calif.
Fullerton snapped a three-game losing streak in improving to 4-5 overall.
UNLV fell to 10-8 overall.
Baker (3-1) retired nine of the first 10 batters she faced, allowing only
a second-inning single in that stretch. She went the distance, scattering
just one run on four hits and striking out four en route to the win.
Jacque Kerrigan (8-7) suffered the loss, going 1/3 of an inning, allowing
four runs on four hits and striking out one.
Back-to-back RBI doubles by Katie Gollhardt and Baker in the first got
the Titans off to a hot start and both were followed by Ashley Van Boxmeer's
first home run in a Titan uniform, a two-run shot to left, for the 4-0
lead.
Van Boxmeer wasn't done, slugging her second home run of the game to deep
left in the fourth inning to make it 5-0.
Marissa Nichols got the Rebels on the board in the sixth, smashing a deep
shot to left to cut the deficit to 5-1.
Cal State Fullerton returns to action next weekend as the Titans play
at home for the first time in the 2005 season as they host the Worth Invitational
at the Titan Softball Complex.
