Titans
Drop Close Pair in Palm Springs on Day Two Feb. 26, 2005 Cathedral City, Calif. Box Score vs. Kansas | Box Score vs. Wisconsin The close games didn't go in the Titans' favor on Saturday afternoon in Cathedral City, Calif., as Cal State Fullerton fell to Kansas, 3-2, in eight innings and 3-1 in the nightcap against Wisconsin. The Titans, now 3-5 overall, move on to Sunday's final game of the tournament against UNLV scheduled for 1 p.m. KANSAS 3, CAL STATE FULLERTON 2 (8 inn.) Jackie Vasquez scored from third base on a botched squeeze play with the game-winning run and the Titans missed a golden opportunity to tie the game in the bottom of the eight as Kansas held on to defeat Cal State Fullerton, 3-2, in eight innings on Saturday afternoon. With a runner on third and one out, Jessica Moppin's squeeze attempt was foiled by the Titans defense, catching Vasquez in a rundown. However, with the runner heading back toward the plate, the throw went high and to the backstop, allowing Vasquez to squeeze under the tag for the 3-2 lead. In their half of the eighth, a successful sacrifice got the TItans' runner to third and brought up Katie Gollhardt, who hit a long fly ball to deep right field where Ashley Frazer made a spectacular running catch while crashing through the fence. Fullerton freshman Amanda Kamekona, however, failed to tag and had to scamper back to third before the throw caught her off base. Jayhawks starter Serena Settlemier (3-2) then induced Candice Baker into a game-ending ground out. Fullerton junior Marissa Marzan (1-3) was the hard luck loser despite allowing just four hits and two earned runs in eight innings. Settlemier allowed just one earned on six hits and struck out six in the complete-game win. Kansas got on the board quickly in the opening half inning as Jessica Moppin sent a 1-2 offering from Marissa Marzan deep over the left field fence for her third home run of the season and a 1-0 Jayhawks lead. The hot Fullerton bats answered back in the bottom of the first, as the first three Titans reached on singles, the last of which was an RBI hit through the left side by Katie Gollhardt, scoring Amanda Kamekona to tie the game at 1-1. After a wild pitch moved both runners into scoring position, Serena Settlemier settled down, getting a pair of lineouts and a pop out to escape the inning. She then helped her own cause, leading off the second with her second home run of the year on the first pitch to give Kansas the lead again at 2-1. Fullerton fought back to tie it in the third as Kamekona led off with an infield single and scored all the way from first when Lindsey Bashor's sacrifice attempt was thrown away twice by the Kansas defense. Kamekona led the Titans' offense, going 3-for-4 at the plate. WISCONSIN 3, CAL STATE FULLERTON 1 Wisconsin starter Eden Brock scattered just three hits while striking out nine to help lift the Badgers to a 3-1 victory over Cal State Fullerton on Saturday evening. Brock (2-1) allowed just a fourth inning run en route to the victory. Titan sophomore Brooke Weekley (0-1) suffered the loss for Fullerton, allowing two runs on four hits in 3.1 innings of work. The Badgers (1-2 overall) got on the board first in the second inning as Ricci Robben led off the inning with a home run to right and Natalie Phillips stroked an RBI single to center with two outs to give Wisconsin a 2-0 lead. Senior Lindsey Bashor, who was 2-for-2 at the plate for the Titans on the game, cut the deficit in half in the fourth for Fullerton (3-5 overall), slamming her second home run of the season to centerfield to get the Titans on the board. Wisconsin got the run back in the fifth on Boo Gilliette's run-scoring fielder's choice, as Athena Vasquez slid under the tag on a close play at home to give the Badgers a 3-1 lead. It was all Brock from there on out as she retired nine of the final 12 batters she faced, allowing only a walk and a fielder's choice in that stretch, to secure the victory. ####
