Romp, Drop Heartbreaker in Palm Springs Feb. 6, 2005 Cathedral City, Calif. Box Score vs. Long Island | Box Score vs. MIssissippi State The Cal State Fullerton softball team opened the 2005 Palm Springs Classic with a split of its two games, defeating Long Island University, 14-0, in five innings before falling to Mississippi State, 5-4, in eight innings on Friday night in Cathedral City, Calif. Fullerton improved to 3-3 overall in its first action since the first week of February due to heavy rains that have blanketed the Southern California region over the last couple weeks. Fullerton returns to action on Saturday (Feb. 26) with a pair of games. The Titans meet Kansas at 10:30 a.m. and Wisconsin at 3:30 p.m. -- note the time change from the previously released time of 5:30 p.m. CAL STATE FULLERTON 14, LONG ISLAND 0 (5 inn.) Cal State Fullerton freshman Kiki Munoz was 4-for-4 with four RBI while three other Titans had multiple hits on the night as Fullerton opened the 2005 Palm Springs Classic with a 14-0 five-inning victory over Long Island on Friday night. Fullerton (3-2 overall) struck first in the second inning as junior Marissa Marzan reached on a one-out single and scored when freshman Kiki Munoz doubled and got caught in a run down, allowing Marzan enough time to scamper home from third for the 1-0 lead. The Titans worked out of a jam in the third after a one-out walk, stolen base and a single put a pair in scoring position for the Blackbirds. However, Marzan induced the next two LIU batters into routine ground balls to third base to end the threat. Cal State Fullerton then broke things wide open in the fourth, plating nine runs and sending 14 batters to the plate while having the bases loaded for the majority of the inning. Munoz had the big blow in the inning, cracking a bases-clearing double to left for her second hit of the inning, while five other Titans drove in runs in the frame, including a two-run single by Katie Gollhardt, for the 10-0 advantage. Fullerton capped the scoring with three runs in the fifth thanks to RBI hits from Lindsey Bashor, Ashley Van Boxmeer, and Dana Crucil. Marzan (1-2) earned the win in the circle for the Titans, scattering three hits in three innings of work. Crucil entered in relief in the fourth and allowed just one hit in two innings of work. Chelsea Crosby (0-2) suffered the defeat for Long Island (0-3 overall), allowing 10 runs on seven hits and walking one. MISSISSIPPI STATE 5, CAL STATE FULLERTON 4 (8 inn.) A wildpitch with one out in the bottom of the eighth plated the winning run as Mississippi State edged Cal State Fullerton, 5-4, in the final game of day one action in Palm Springs for both teams. After the Titans failed to score in their half of the eight, the Bulldogs put runners on second and third after an intentional walk and a sacrifice by Tanelda McDonald. Then, as Fullerton was attempting to intentionally walk Jennifer Jessup to load the bases and set up a force play, the third ball got away and went to the backstop, allowing Blair Geddings to scamper home from third with the winning run on a close play at the plate. Candice Baker (2-1) suffered her first loss of the season, allowing just two earned runs on six hits in 7.1 innings of work. Melissa Massey (3-1) earned the win for the Bulldogs, tossing 1 2/3 innings on one-hit softball in relief of starter Stephanie Comeaux. Mississippi State wasted no time in getting on the board in the bottom of the first, as Geddings scored on a passed ball with one out for the 1-0 lead. MSU added another run in the second as Callye Williams reached on a single and scored two batters later on Katie Johnson's infield hit and and an error on the putout attempt. The Titans got a run back in the third as Lindsey Bashor led off with her first home run of the season down the left field line, cutting the deficit to 2-1. After a walk to Katie Gollhardt, Fullerton tied it with two outs as Marissa Marzan doubled over the head of the left fielder, bringing Gollhardt home from second and knotting the score at 2-2. That's when Courtney Bures stepped to the plate for MSU, sending a 0-1 offering from Baker over the left field fence with a runner on to give the Bulldogs the 4-2 advantage. Cal State Fullerton would not go quietly, however, staging a late seventh inning rally. Sophomore Tiffany Hoff smacked a pinch-hit triple down the right field line to get the rally started and Crystal Vieyra reentered and scored on Amanda Kamekona's single up the middle to cut it to 4-3. The Titans then tied it after a passed ball moved runners to second and third and Kamekona scored on Katie Gollhardt's sac fly to center to send the game into extra innings. Bashor was 2-for-4 to lead all Titans' hitters. ####
