Former Cal State Fullerton All-American Gina Oaks had an RBI single in the bottom of the eighth inning to lift the U.S. Elite Team to an Independence Day victory over host Canada at the 2005 Canada Cup in Surrey, British Columbia.

The U.S. Elite Team improved to 4-0 in the tournament and will continue pool play on Tuesday, July 5 at 3:30 p.m. against New Zealand.

“I really sat back during the final at bat and tried to focus in on what she was going to throw me,” said Oaks. “She had struck me out twice already so I was ready to make something happen.”

After placing Nicole Giordano at second base, Canada intentionally walked Heather Scaglione before Marissa Nichols laid a perfect bunt to move the runners. Oaks then came to the plate and drove an inside pitch to left field for just her second hit of the week, scoring the only run of the game and giving the U.S. the 1-0 win.
