Win Series With Ninth-Inning Rally April 3, 2005 Fullerton, Calif. Box Score Shannon Brooks' RBI bloop single to centerfield in the top of the ninth scored Chelsy Stoufer with the game-winning run as Cal Poly took two of three from Cal State Fullerton with a 4-3 win on Sunday afternoon at the Titan Softball Complex. Fullerton fell to 13-14 overall, 4-2 in the Big West Conference, while Cal Poly improved to 23-11 overall, 8-1 in league play. Stoufer led off the ninth with a single and was moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Sarah Iwata to put her in scoring position. That brought up Brooks, whose soft liner to center fell just in front of the glove of a lunging Lindsey Bashor, allowing Stoufer to score from second with the run. The Titans had a rally going in the ninth as Kiki Munoz reached on an error by the shortstop and Bashor smacked a one-out single to put a pair on for Cal State Fullerton. However, Cal Poly starter Robyn Kontra (14-4) worked out of the jam, getting the lead runner on a fielder's choice and a ground ball back to the circle to end the game. Kontra outdueled Fullerton's Marissa Marzan (5-5) as both pitchers went the distance. Kontra allowed three runs (two earned) on nine hits, walking a pair and striking out four. Marzan suffered the loss in the longest outing of her career, allowing four runs on 13 hits, walking two and striking out three. The Mustangs thought they had it won in the seventh as Chelsy Stoufer's fourth home run of the season to left gave Cal Poly a 3-2 lead. However, the Titans scratched across a run to tie in the bottom of the seventh as Kiki Munoz walked and was replaced by pinch runner Whitney Kroh. Pinch hitter Tiffany Hoff, whose long drive down the left field line that would have won the game was ruled foul, then singled to right a few pitches later and Kroh moved to third on the play when the ball was bobbled. That brought up Lindsey Bashor, who hit a soft pop-up to second base for the second out. However, the fielder's back was to the plate, giving Kroh a chance to score and tie it at 3-3 thanks to the sacrifice fly. Marzan then escaped a bases-loaded jam in the eighth and Cal Poly's Robyn Kontra stranded runners at second and third in the same inning to send it to the ninth. The Titans got on the board with a pair of runs in the first as Amanda Kamekona doubled with one out and scored on Ashley Van Boxmeer's fifth home run of the season for the 2-0 lead. Cal Poly scratched back with a run in the second on an RBI single by Jackie Gehrke-Jones, and tied it in the sixth on another RBI hit by Gehrke-Jones, who finished 3-for-4. Stoufer also finished with three hits for the Mustangs as three other players had multiple hits. Fullerton was led at the plate by Van Boxmeer, who was 2-for-3. Seven other players had single hits. Cal Poly stranded 12 runners on base while Cal State Fullerton left nine on. Cal State Fullerton continues Big West Conference action next weekend as the Titans travel to UC Riverside for a three game series on April 9-10. Saturday's doubleheader begins at 1 p.m. with Sunday's final game starting at 12 p.m. ####
