The 2005 Cal State Fullerton softball team was picked to finish fifth
in the Big West Conference this season according to a vote of the league's
coaches released on Wednesday afternoon by the conference office.
The Titans, who finished last season with an 18-34 overall record and
a 7-14 mark in conference play for sixth place, received 37 points in
the poll, standing ahead of Cal Poly (25), UC Riverside (16) and Utah
State (11).
Long Beach State was picked to repeat as conference champions, receiving
five first-place votes and 59 points. Cal State Northridge was selected
second with two first-place nods and 48 points, followed by Pacific with
47 points, and UC Santa Barbara with 45 points and the remaining first
place vote.
Fullerton returns seven letterwinners, five position starters and both
starting pitchers from last year's squad while welcoming 12 newcomers
to the roster.
Cal State Fullerton officially kicks off the season on Feb. 5-6 as the
Titans take on host and defending national champion UCLA and Georgia at
the Stacy Winsberg Memorial Classic.
