Titans' Baker Named Big West Pitcher
of the Week Feb. 9, 2005 Fullerton, Calif.
Cal State Fullerton sophomore right-hander Candice Baker was named the
Big West Conference Pitcher of the Week on Wednesday after pitching the
Titans to a pair of wins over top-10 opponents last weekend.
Baker defeated No. 2/3 UCLA by a count of 4-3 and No. 7/10 Georgia, 9-1,
in five innings in back-to-back starts at the Stacy Winsberg Memorial
Classic hosted by the Bruins in Lakewood, Calif.
The sophomore went the distance in both games, allowing four earned runs
on 11 hits, walking four and striking out nine – including six of
those punch-outs against UCLA. Opponents hit a combined .250 against her
on the weekend.
It is the first career Big West weekly honor for Baker, who also hit .333
with three runs scored, a double and three stolen bases.
Cal State Fullerton returns to action this weekend as one of 19 teams
at the Kajikawa Classic hosted by Arizona State. The Titans open against
Syracuse and South Carolina on Friday (Feb. 11) at ASU's Farrington Stadium
at 10 a.m. and 12:15 p.m., respectively.
