Marissa Marzan tossed a four-hitter on Sunday while Lindsey Bashor had
a pair of doubles as Cal State Fullerton beat UC Davis 5-2 in a nonconference
softball matchup at La Rue Field.
The Titans, who swept the three-game set this weekend, improved to 22-19
while the Aggies fell to 7-43. Megan De La Hoya had a two-out, two-run
single to center in the seventh inning for the Aggies, extending her hitting
streak to a season-best 10 games. Catcher Megan Turman had a pair of hits
for UC Davis, including a double.
Marzan had a save in Saturday's first game between the teams then came
back in the nightcap to throw a three-hit shutout. She was nearly as effective
for most of Sunday, giving up just two hits through the first six innings
before UC Davis rallied for a pair of runs in its last at-bat.
Marzan, who improved to 10-5, finished with seven strikeouts on Sunday
while allowing four hits and four walks.
The Titans gave her a quick 1-0 lead in the first inning when Bashor led
off with a double to left-center field. After being sacrficed to third,
she scored on Katie Gollhardt's fly to center. Cal State Fullerton added
an unearned run in the fourth and then tallied two in the sixth on Candice
Baker's RBI single to center and Ashley Van Box Meer's run-scoring double
to left.
Another sacrifice fly in the seventh made it 5-0 for the Titans before
UC Davis fought back in the bottom half ot the frame. Turman's double
to left put a pair of runners in scoring position, and with two outs,
De La Hoya posted a single to center to score Stacey Benzing and Turman.
She's hit in 10 straight games, dating back to April 21.
Rachel Kelly gave up five hits and three earned runs before being relieved
by Lauren Pieretti in the sixth inning. Kelly had three strikeouts and
a walk while Pieretti allowed one earned run and three hits.
Van Boxmeer had two hits for the Titans, part of their eight-hit attack.
Cal State Fullerton returns to action next weekend as the Titans play
host to Pacific in a three games series on May 7-8 at the Titan Softball
Complex.
