Titans, Highlanders Split Doubleheader
May 1, 2004 – Fullerton, Calif.

Box Score Game One | Box Score Game Two

Cal State Fullerton and UC Riverside split a Big West Conference softball doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at the Titan Softball Complex with the Titans taking game one, 3-1, and the Highlanders coming out on top with a seventh inning rally in game two to win, 3-2.

Cal State Fullerton fell to 16-29 overall, 5-9 in the Big West Conference. UC Riverside improved to 12-43, 2-11 in league play. It was the Highlanders first-ever win in the 12-game series with the Titans (1-11).

In game one, freshman right-hander Brooke Weekley scattered just four hits and needed only an economical 81 pitches to defeat the Highlanders, 3-1.

The Titans got on the board first in the third, as junior LIndsey Bashor singled up the middle, scoring Julie Watson from third for the 1-0 lead.

Jenna Wheeler then drove in a run with a single back up the middle for the 2-0 lead and added another when the centerfielder's throw was offline to third base, allowing Tiffany Hoff to score for the 3-0 advantage.

UCR rebounded with a run in the fourth as Melissa Sanchez smacked her seventh home run of the year, a one-out first-pitch offering from Weekley (12-14), over the right field fence to cut the deficit to 3-1.

However, that is all the Titans and Weekley needed as she retired 11 of the final 14 batters and allowed just one other runner to reach second base. Janell Jackson (4-14) took the loss for the Highlanders, allowing two earned on six hits and walking three.

Watson led the Titans at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a run scored. Four other Titans had hits on the afternoon. Four different UCR batters accounted for the Highlanders' hits in the game.

In game two, Eliizabeth Buck drove in all three runs, including the eventual game-winner with two outs in the seventh, as the Highlanders defeated the Titans, 3-2.

UC Riverside broke the scoreless tie in the third as Eliizabeth Buck's two-run double to right centerfield brought home a pair and gave the Highlanders their first lead of the series.

The two runs in the inning were the most scored by UCR in a single inning against the Titans in the history of the series and doubled the total number of runs scored by the Highlanders in the 10-game series.

Cal State Fullerton evened things up in the sixth when Jenna Wheeler plated a pair with a two-out single back up the middle, scoring pinch runner Crystal Medina and Lindey Bashor to tie the game at 2-2.

Weekley (12-15) then entered in relief for the Titans and put two runners on thanks to a single and an error. After getting Melissa Sanchez to foul out for the second out, Buck came up and, with runners at first and second, hit a sharp single to center, scoring Jamie Yee with the go-ahead run.

UCR's Sara Radabaugh (2-6) then took the circle in the seventh and set the Titans down in order to end the game. Radabaugh allowed two runs on six hits, walking one and striking out three.

Weekley suffered the loss, allowing an unearned run on two hits, striking out one. Julie Watson and Tiffany Hoff each had two hits for the Titans.

Cal State Fullerton closes out the home portion of its 2004 schedule on Sunday with the final game of the series against UC Riverside. First pitch is scheduled for noon and will be preceeded by Senior Day festivities beginning at approximately 11:45 a.m.
