Del Calvo's Blast Lifts Princeton Past
Fullerton Mar. 16, 2004 – Fullerton, Calif.
Box Score Princeton's Kristin Del Calvo's three-run home run in
the third proved to be the difference as the Tigers rallied from two runs
down to defeat Cal State Fullerton, 4-3, on Tuesday night at the Titan
Softball Complex.
The Titans fell to 7-16 overall while Princeton improved to 6-4 overall
on the year.
Cal State Fullerton struck first in the opening inning, loading the bases
with one out and scoring a pair when Candice Baker singled back through
the box to score Julie Watson and Lindsey Bashor for the 2-0 lead.
An RBI fielder's choice by Erin Snyder got the Tigers to within a run,
but the big blow in the inning was dealt by Del Calvo, whose two-out home
run cleared the fence in left field, giving Princeton a 4-2 advantage.
Fullerton got a run back in the fifth when Baker's single to center was
misplayed by the fielder, allowing Bashor to score all the way from first
base, cutting the gap to 4-3. The Titans lost out on a chance to tie when
Baker tried to score on a ball that went to the backstop, but catcher
Ty Ries blocked enough of the plate and applied the tag to preserve the
lead.
However, Snyder took control after the second inning, retiring 16 of the
final 19 Titans she faced, including striking out the final two batters
of the game.
Weekley (4-7) suffered the loss, allowing four runs on five hits and striking
out three before leaving at the start of the fourth inning. Baker was
super in relief, throwing four innings of shutout softball, allowing five
hits and striking out four.
Snyder (4-2) went the distance, allowing two earned runs on five hits,
walking three and striking out 10.
The Titans return to action this weekend as they open both fields at the
Titan Softball Complex for the second time in three weeks, hosting the
16-team Kia Klassic.
Pool play begins on Wednesday night (March 17) at 5 p.m. on both field.
Play continues on Thursday, Friday and Saturday mornings at 9 a.m. with
championship bracket play to begin at approximately 5 p.m. on Friday afternoon.
