Arizona State's Desiree Serrano scattered just five hits while three different
Sun Devils tallied an RBI to lead No. 18 ASU to a 3-0 victory over No.
24 Cal State Fullerton on Saturday in the first game of the Bronze Championship
at the NFCA Leadoff Classic.
Cal State Fullerton fell to 4-9 overall, moving into the consolation bracket
of the Bronze Championship. The Titans will face the loser of the Ohio
State-Virginia Tech match up on Sunday morning at 6 a.m (PST). Arizona
State moves to 16-9 and advanced in the winners bracket to face the winner
between the Buckeyes and Hokies at 8 a.m. (PST).
Desiree Serrano (9-2) earned the win, allowing only two baserunners to
reach second base. She struck out seven in the complete game victory,
setting down 12 of the last 14 batters she faced.
Candice Baker (1-6) suffered the loss, allowing three runs on five hits
in three innings. Brooke Weekley pitched well in relief, tossing three
innings of no-hit softball, striking out three, and retiring eight of
the first nine batters she faced.
Arizona State got on the board first in the second inning as Himmita Hixson's
RBI single to center scored Heidi Knabe from third for the 1-0 advantage.
ASU made it 2-0 in the fourth on an RBI double to right center by Phalen
Wright, plating Val Sevilla.
Kim Zadrozny drove in another in the fourth with a perfectly-executed
squeeze bunt, plating Wright from third to make it 3-0.
Serrano took things from there, allowing just a pair of singles from fourth
inning on. Five different ASU players tallied hits for the Sun Devils
while five Titans contributed hits.
