Titans Picked Second in Big West Preseason Poll
Jan. 14, 2004 – Fullerton, Calif.

The Cal State Fullerton softball team was picked to finish second in the Big West Conference in 2004 according to a poll of the league's coaches released by the conference office on Wednesday afternoon.

The Titans, who return just five letterwinners and three position starters from last year's NCAA Tournament team, received three first-place votes and finished with 56 points.

That total was three points behind Long Beach State, which was picked to win the conference crown for the first time since 1999. The 49ers received four first place votes and finished with 59 points.

Cal State Northridge received the final first-place vote and was picked third by the coaches with a total of 47 points.

Pacific, UC Santa Barbara, Cal Poly, UC Riverside and Utah State round out the poll in that order.

Cal State Fullerton has claimed each of the last four Big West Conference softball championships dating back to the 2000 season and has won seven overall since 1986 -- the most of any school in the history of the league.

Last season, the Titans were 41-15 overall and finished Big West play with a 20-1 record. Cal State Fullerton advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the fifth consecutive season and earned a berth in the postseason for the 22nd time in 24 years.

Fullerton opens the 2004 season with an exhibition doubleheader against the Canadian National Team on Feb. 9 at 5 p.m. before kicking things off in Phoenix, Ariz. at the Arizona State Fiesta Bowl Classic on Feb. 13-15.
