Split Twinbill to Close Out 2004 Season May 15, 2004 Santa Barbara, Calif. Box Score Game 1 | Box Score Game 2 The Cal State Fullerton softball team closed out its 2004 season with a doubleheader split against UC Santa Barbara, holding on to win a wild opener, 9-8, and narrowly missing the comeback win with a 6-5 loss in the nightcap. The Titans finish their season with a 18-34 overall record and a 7-14 mark in the Big West. UC Santa Barbara improved to 32-29, 14-7, and must await the decision of the NCAA selection committee to determine its postseason fate. In the opener, Fullerton sent 11 batters to the plate in the opening inning, scoring seven runs, but needed a seventh-inning home run by Jody Campbell to hold off the Gauchos, 9-8. The Titans jumped all over UCSB starter Jennifer Davis who, one day earlier had held Fullerton to just one hit. A bases-loaded walk to Jenna Wheeler got the Titans on the board and they scored a second run when Porsha Draper reached on an infield single to make it 2-0. Davis then walked Campbell for another run before getting Jennifer Holt to pop up for the second out. Lindsay Sommer then entered in relief and hit Crystal Medina on her first pitch to make it 4-0. That brought up Julie Watson, who skied a pitch over the right fielder's head for a bases-clearing triple and a 7-0 Titan lead. UCSB responded with a pair of runs in the first thanks to three-straight hits to lead off the inning, the third a run-scoring single by Kendra Singley. Lindsey Herrin added a sacrifice fly two batters later to make it 7-2. The Titans got a run back in the second on another bases-loaded walk to Campbell to make it 8-2, marking the end of the day for Sommer, who was replaced from the UCSB bullpen by Herrin, who struck out Medina looking to end the threat. Combined, the first two innnings lasted 1:30 with 10 runs on 14 hits and nine left on base. Both teams were held scoreless until the fifth when the Gauchos put up five runs to close to within 8-7. Four straight one-out hits and a wild pitch brought UCSB to within 8-5, and closed the gap even further on a two-out single by Karyna Wilkerson off Brooke Weekley to make it a one-run game. Campbell came up in the seventh and blasted her first career home run to left centerfield to give the Titans a much-needed one-run cushion as a one-out double by Shelby Hensler scored Leslie Simien in the bottom of the seventh to make it 9-8. However, Weekley worked out of the jam, stranding Hensler at third with the tying run by striking out Singley and getting Heather Nobbe to foul out to end the game. Candice Baker, who was 3-for-4 with a pair of runs scored in the game, started in the circle and went 3 2/3 innings, allowing seven runs on 13 hits. Weekley (14-17) finished the game, allowing just one run on two hits, walking three and striking out two to earn the win. Campbell was 1-for-1 for the Titans with three RBI, drawing three walks in her first three plate appearances, twice with the bases loaded. Porsha Draper and Julie Watson each added two hits. Davis (15-15) suffered the loss, allowing six runs on three hits and walking two. In game two, Fullerton's seventh inning comeback fell just short as UC Santa Barbara took the series with a 6-5 win in the night cap. The Titans trailed 6-3 entering the final inning of play before Tantlinger drew a one out walk and scored when Lindsey Bashor slugged her ninth home run of the season to left to make it a one-run game. However, the Gauchos' Jennifer Davis (16-15) got a pair of ground balls to end the game and secure the win. Cal State Fullerton jumped out to the quick 2-0 lead in the first on a two-run single by Jenna Wheeler. However that lead was short lived as a one-out walk and back-to-back singles by the Gauchos in the bottom of the inning loaded the bases for Lindsey Herrin, who slugged her 10th home run of the year to left to put UCSB up 4-2. The Titans got a run back in the third when Tantlinger scored on a wild pitch, closing the gap to 4-3, but the Gauchos pulled even further ahead on a run-scoring fielder's choice by Shelbby Hensler and a sacrifice fly by Kenrda Singley to cap the scoring. Davis threw 4 2/3 innings of relief in the win, allowing two runs on three hits, walking one and striking out seven -- including the first five batters she faced in the game. Weekley (14-17) suffered the loss, allowing four runs on thre hits in only one innning of work. Candice Baker pitched well in relief, allowing two unearned runs on four hits and striking out four. Baker and Julie Watson each had two hits on the day to lead the Titans' offense. ####
