Bloop Single Lifts UCLA Past Cal State Fullerton
Mar. 30, 2004 – Los Angeles, Calif.

Box Score

Tara Henry's bloop single down the left field line with the bases loaded in the seventh completed host UCLA's comeback from three runs down as the No. 2 Bruins defeated Cal State Fullerton, 4-3, on Tuesday afternoon at Easton Stadium.

The Titans had their three-game winning streak snapped and fell to 11-20 overall on the season. UCLA improved to 27-1 overall on the year.

After working out of a bases loaded jam in the sixth, Titan freshman Candice Baker (4-12) got herself into another one in the seventh. After getting UCLA's Jodie Legaspi to ground out to start the inning, Baker walked the next two batters and allowed a single back up the middle to Kristen Dedmon to load the bases.

That brought up Henry, who chopped Baker's 3-2 offering over the head of the drawn-in Titan infield to score pinch-runner Alyssa Eno with the game-winning run.

Fullerton broke the scoreless tie in the second, scoring three runs and capitalizing on a pair of UCLA defensive miscues.

Jennifer Holt reached on a fielder's choice, moved to second on a walk to Jenna Wheeler and moved to third when Brooke Weekley singled through the left side to load the bases.

That brought up Julie Watson, whose speed forced Bruins third baseman Andrea Duran to try and get the final out of the inning at home. However, Duran's throw to Emily Zaplatosch was too much for the catcher to handle and it rolled all the way to the backstop, allowing two runners to score for the 2-0 Titans lead.

Junior Monica Tantlinger made it 3-0 with her RBI single to left, scoring Weekley from third. Watson was thrown out on the play trying to score to end any additional Titans threat.

UCLA got two runs back in the fourth when Zaplatosch smacked her fifth home run of the season over the right centerfield wall with a runner on second and one out, cutting the deficit to 3-2.

The Bruins' leading hitter, Stephanie Ramos, then tied the game in the fifth, smacking a one-out shot over the right field fence.

Fullerton freshman Brooke Weekley threw 4 2/3 innings in the no decision, allowing three runs on four hits, walking seven and striking out three. Baker tossed 1 2/3 innings, allowing a run on three hits and walking four in the loss.

UCLA freshman Lisa Dodd (11-1) earned the win, allowing three unearned runs on three hits, walking one and striking out seven.

Junior Lindsey Bashor had the other hit for the Titans, a two-out double in the first inning. Ramos was 2-for-4 for the Bruins while Henry was 2-for-2.

Cal State Fullerton returns to action this weekend as the Titans open Big West Conference play with a three-game series at Utah State beginning with a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon and finishing with a single game on Sunday.
