An eighth inning wild pitch allowed Gina Oaks to score from third, and
Jodie Cox made that run stand as she pitched a two-hit shutout in Cal
State Fullerton’s 1-0 victory over Northwestern in their second
game of day two at the Worth Invitational.
The Titans moved to 15-6 on the season and 3-1 in tournament play, while
the Wildcats dropped to 7-5 overall and 2-2 on the weekend.
Cox (5-4) dominated the Wildcats, going the distance while striking 13
batters and allowing no walks.
The story of the day for Fullerton, however, was the offense…or
lack there of. After looking like their bats had fully awoken from an
early season slumber by exploding for 15 runs in the first day of the
tournament, the Titan machine came to a grinding halt to score just one
run in the two games on the day.
Minnesota's Hailee Nanchy slugged the first pitch from Cal State Fullerton
pitcher Gina Oaks over the fence in left in the fifth inning as the No.
24 Golden Gophers upset the No. 7 Titans, 1-0, in day two action at the
Worth Invitational.
Cal State Fullerton fell to 14-6 overall while Minnesota improved to 10-2-1
overall on the season. Both teams are 2-1 in tournament play.
Oaks (10-2) no-hit the Golden Gophers through 5 1/3 innings before Nanchy
sent the ball out to left for the only run Minnesota would need. Oaks
allowed the run on three hits, walking one and striking out eight.
Piper Marten (5-1) was masterful in the circle, scattering just five hits,
walking one and striking out seven in the complete game victory.
Five different Titans notched hits on the afternoon while three different
Golden Gophers had base knocks.
The loss for the Titans snaps their 32-game home winning streak dating
back to the beginning of last season.
The Titans return to action on Sunday for the final day of the tournament
as they take on Ohio State at 8 a.m. on Field 1.
