Cal State Fullerton senior Gina Oaks surrendered just three hits and gave
the Titans the only run they would need with a first-pitch, lead-off home
run over the left field fence as No. 10 Fullerton upset top-ranked UCLA,
2-0, on Saturday morning at Easton Stadium in Los Angeles, Calif.
The Titans improved to 2-1 overall on the year while the Bruins fell to
1-1 overall.
Oaks (2-0) struck out seven and walked eight, but got some help from the
UCLA bats, who were quiet for the entire day. Keira Goerl (1-1) suffered
the loss, allowing both runs on eight hits, striking out six.
After Oaks' leadoff home run, senior third baseman Amy LaRocque doubled
home Amanda Hockett for the game's second run and a 2-0 Titan advantage.
The Titan defense then provided all the support Oaks would need, snuffing
out two Bruins bases loaded opportunities and stranding runners on the
corners in the seventh to secure the victory. UCLA stranded 11 runners
on base for the game compared to Cal State Fullerton's six.
Senior Kristy Halagarda and junior Julie Watson each had two hits on the
day while four other players had hits.
Cal State Fullerton's nightcap with Loyola Marymount was called due to
darkness with the Titans leading 3-2 after three full innings. A game
must go five innings for it to be official.
The Titans return to action on Friday (Feb. 7) at 11 a.m. as they open
play at the Arizona State Fiesta Bowl Classic against Texas A&M and
later that afternoon at approximately 1:30 p.m. against Massachusetts.
