Cal State Fullerton opened the 2003 season on a high note by sweeping
the Spanish National Team in a doubleheader by the scores of 24-1 and
8-0, both in five innings, on Tuesday night at the Titan Softball Complex.
The Titans open the regular season this weekend when they travel north
to compete in the second annual Stacy WInsberg Memorial Tournament hosted
by UCLA. Cal State Fullerton opens the tournament with a doubleheader
against Alabama on Friday morning (Jan. 31) at 9 a.m.
Senior shortstop Amanda Hockett belted three home runs on the day to lead
the offense and was 5-for-6 for the two games with six RBI and four runs
scored. The Titans combined to knock out 29 hits on the evening.
Had this been a regular season game, the 24 runs scored in game one by
Fullerton would have broken the school record for runs in a single game
set back in 1987 when the Titans defeated San Diego State, 20-0.
Cal State Fullerton scored 11 runs in the first inning of the first game,
added four runs in the second and third and capped off the scoring with
a five-run fourth. Six different Titans had at least two hits while three
players had three-or-more RBI.
In game two, senior Jodie Cox and freshman Roxy Moran combined for a no-hitter
and Hockett went 2-for-2 with a pair of home runs as the Titans cruised
to an 8-0 victory.
Cox finished with one walk and nine strikeouts in four innings of work
while Moran closed things out with an inning of work and a strikeout.
Hockett, sophomore Caylin Hornish (3-for-3) and junior Julie Watson (3-for-3)
had multiple hits on the day while four other Titans added hits in the
second game.
