Jodie Cox Named Big West Player of the Week Feb. 26, 2003 Fullerton, Calif.
Cal State Fullerton senior outfielder Jodie Cox (Lancaster, Calif./Quartz
Hill HS) was named the Big West Conferences Player of the Week,
the Irvine-based league office announced on Wednesday afternoon, after
her performance at the NFCA Leadoff Classic in Columbus, Ga.
It is the first career player of the week honor for Cox, who was also
named the Big Wests Pitcher of the Week this season on Feb. 12.
It is the third consecutive week that a Titan has been named player of
the week, following teammates Jenny Topping (Feb. 12) and Amanda Hockett
(Feb. 18).
Cox was named as one of 13 players to the NFCA Leadoff Classics
All-Tournament Team earlier in the week after going 6-for-11 (.545) at
the plate with three runs scored, a double and three RBI. She slugged
.636 for the week and amassed an on base percentage of .400.
She was 4-for-5 in the Titans tournament opener on Saturday (Feb.
22), including knocking the game-tying, two-out, two-run single in the
seventh and scoring the game-winning run one batter later. After going
hitless against then-No. 10 Oklahoma, Cox was 2-for-3 in the tournament
finale against Villanova, including scoring the game-winning run on Amy
LaRocques RBI single in the fourth en route to a 3-0 Fullerton victory.
Cox is hitting .351 overall on the season with a team-best 12 runs scored,
two home runs and 11 RBI. She is slugging .491 on the year to go with
two doubles and a stolen base. She is also 3-4 in the circle for the Titans
with a 1.77 ERA and 61 strikeouts in 47 1/3 innings. She leads the conference
with a .136 opponents batting average and has struck out 10 or more batters
in four of her last five starts.
Cal State Fullerton returns to action this weekend when it hosts the 10-team
Worth Invitational at the Titan Softball Complex. Defending NCAA National
Champion California highlights the tournament field, which also features
such nationally ranked programs as No. 4 Washington, No. 17 Oregon State,
No. 20 Ohio State and No. 24 Minnesota.
