Cox Named Big West Co-Pitcher of the Week
April 21, 2003 – Fullerton, Calif.

Cal State Fullerton senior lefthander Jodie Cox (Lancaster, Calif./Quartz Hill HS) was named the Big West Conference's Co-Pitcher of the Week on Monday afternoon after her stellar performances against Long Beach State this past weekend.

She shared the honor with the 49ers' Meredith Cervenka.

Cox won the award for the second straight week and the fourth time overall this season -- the most among league hurlers. It is the ninth career honor for Cox, putting her in a tie for third all time in Big West Conference history with former UNLV pitcher Lori Harrigan.

Cox trails only teammate Gina Oaks (10 career Pitcher of the Week award) and former Pacific ace Cindy Ball (11 career honors) on the all-time list.

Cox was 2-0 last week, pitching a pair of four-hit shutouts to win her 18th and 19th consecutive Big West Conference starts dating back to April 21, 2001. She did not allow a run in 17 innings, scattering just eight hits and striking out 24 batters in her two starts.

In game one, Cox went all 10 innings to pick up the victory, striking out 13 batters -- just three short of tying her career high. She almost duplicated the effort in game three of the series, striking out 11 Long Beach State betters en route to the 4-0 win.

Cox extended her scoreless innings streak to 36 innings while notching her fifth consecutive shutout and also tallying her eighth and ninth double-digit strikeout games of the year. She allowed just one extra base hit on the weekend and held the 49ers' bats to a .133 team batting average.

Cox improved to 15-7 overall on the year, having won her last eight consecutive starts dating back to March 29, with a 1.27 ERA, which ranks second in the Big West. She leads the league in opponents' batting average (.131), strikeouts (173) and earned runs allowed (27) while co-leading the conference in victories and complete games (19).

Cal State Fullerton returns to action this weekend when it opens a three-game series at UC Riverside. The series kicks off with a doubleheader on Saturday (April 26) at Noon and concludes with a single game on Sunday (April 27), also at 12 p.m.
